Psychic Reader Film Festival, the inaugural film festival presented by Psychic Reader NYC, in Brooklyn, New York, on October 9, 2026, with a special one-day program celebrating the dark, atmospheric, and diverse world of Asian horror cinema.
The festival’s inaugural edition will spotlight horror films from Indonesia, a program designed to introduce local film audiences to the distinctive storytelling, mythology, and cultural traditions behind Southeast Asian horror. The masterpiece of the program will be a screening of the 1980 original film Satan’s Slave (Pengabdi Setan), an iconic Indonesian horror film that inspired the film sequel by Indonesian acclaimed filmmaker Joko Anwar. The film is widely recognized as a landmark of contemporary Indonesian horror, combining supernatural terror with family drama and deeply rooted local traditions. The festival will also feature The Forbidden Door (Pintu Terlarang), an acclaimed psychological horror thriller by Joko Anwar. The film follows a successful sculptor whose seemingly perfect life begins to unravel after he discovers a mysterious door concealing a disturbing secret.
In addition to the feature films, Psychic Reader Film Festival will present two independent short horror films through a special collaboration with the Pacitan Horror Film Festival, an independent horror film festival in East Java, Indonesia. These short films highlight emerging independent filmmakers and stories inspired by the local culture, traditions, folklore, and darker mythology of East Java Island. The region of Pacitan is famously known as “Bumi Seribu Satu Goa” — the Land of a Thousand and One Caves, reflecting its distinctive natural landscape and rich cultural heritage.
