About this Event

Line Management
Course Overview

This one-day Line Management training course focuses on the practical realities of line management, helping participants build confidence, communicate more effectively and manage performance in a way that enables people to do their best work. It is designed specifically for people working in the theatre industry who manage staff as well as freelancers.

The course reframes line management as a process of enabling and developing strengths, rather than simply supervising or “managing” people. Using theatre-specific language, real examples and up-to-date case studies, participants are given tools they can apply immediately in their own organisations.

The course is delivered in person at 32 Rose Street, London.

What the Course Covers

The course explores the key responsibilities of line management, including:

  • Recruitment and selection
  • Performance management
  • Team communication and dynamics
  • Navigating difficult conversations
  • Employee relations
  • Informal and formal approaches to resolving issues
  • Ending the employment relationship

The course combines individual reflection, group work, theatre-specific case studies, role play, and practical theory to give participants hands-on experience in managing people.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will:

· Understand the role of a line manager as enabling and developing individuals, rather than simply managing tasks

  • Feel more confident monitoring performance and delivering constructive feedback
  • Be better equipped to handle difficult conversations and challenging situations
  • Strengthen communication within their teams
  • Identify a personal learning objective to support their ongoing development

Who It’s For

This course is ideal for:

  • Line Managers and heads of department
  • General Managers, Company Managers and Producers
  • Staff new to managing people
  • Experienced managers looking to refresh or strengthen their approach

It is suitable for organisations across subsidised/not-for-profit and commercial theatre, and for teams of all sizes.
