John Spillane – the Maestro of Cork – makes his long-overdue return to Castlewellan, where this time he will be accompanied by: renowned composer/producer Graham Henderson (keys), the olllam's own Seán O'Meara (guitar), percussionist extraordinaire (and Castlewellan native) Emma King, Co. Clare's maestro fiddler Tola Custy & world-renowned piper/founding member of the olllam John McSherry (uillean pipes, low whistle) AKA the magnificent Soma House Band.Spillane is a storyteller, poet, dreamer, songwriter, recording artist and musician whose live performances have captivated audiences all over the world. With gorgeous melodies and elegant colloquialisms, he beautifully encapsulates the universal through the everyday. His vocal style has a unique almost sean-nós like quality and his performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish, irreverent humour. John has the ability to charm, mesmerise and entertain in equal measure.A native of Cork, the County he lovingly describes as “the centre of the universe”, John’s music is inspired by and encapsulates Irish traditional music in its contemporary form – a reflection of Ireland today.
His extensive repertoire, referred to by the man himself as the “hit factory”, includes sublime gems such as All the Ways You Wander, Dunnes Stores Girl, Hey Dreamer, and the stunning Passage West. We are beyond excited to hear which gems these incredible musicians choose to perform together – for one night only!“John's songs are the heart and soul of our island and they'll be sung around the world for as long as there is song.” - Damien Dempsey (Soma House Band guest of 2018)
