A lovely introduction to weaving with locally sourced willow. Using a template you will learn 3 basic weaving skills and also about the lore and history of this beautiful sustainable material. Not to mention helping hungry birds during the breeding season! A moderate level of manual dexterity is needed for this activity.
Your Facilitator
Heather lives and works in the Newry Mourne and Down area creating and crafting magnificent willow sculptures and functional items. She studied sculpture at University of Ulster and was drawn to the Art Povera movementalso environmental artists such as Richard Long. This led her to learning the skills of the basketmaker to help her develop ways of using natural materials to make sculptures. It is a lifelong learning experience but she loves to share a little of what she has learned in the hope that others will find they love using Willow too. At present she is working with members of the public to build a 26 foot tall Wickerman for the Lughnasa festival in August.
