A book club, but for plays! We will meet every month to discuss a play from the Library for the Performing Arts circulating collection.
About this Event

Play Club is like a book club, but for plays! Whether you are familiar with the art of reading plays, or looking to expand your appreciation for dramatic literature, this book club is an opportunity to read plays you have been meaning to explore or have never considered reading before. Learn about new works, discover new playwrights, and make friends!

This group will read one playscript from the Library for the Performing Arts circulating collection every month, and then come together to discuss the work. We will read one scene from the play together and discuss the text in a book club discussion format.

This program will take place in person at the Library at the Performing Arts Harvey Fierstein Theatre Lab. If you would like to participate in an on Zoom.

This program is intended for adult patrons.

Thursday, October 29 at 6:30pm -

At the start of the Great Recession, one of the last auto stamping plants in Detroit is on shaky ground. Each of the workers have to make choices on how to move forward if their plant goes under. Shanita has to decide how she'll support herself and her unborn child, Faye has to decide how and where she'll live, and Dez has to figure out how to make his ambitious dreams a reality. Power dynamics shift as their manager Reggie is torn between doing right by his work family, and by the red tape in his office. Powerful and tense, Skeleton Crew is the third of Dominique Morisseau's Detroit cycle trilogy.

Dominique Morisseau is the author of The Detroit Project cycle, which includes the plays Skeleton Crew, Paradise Blue, and Detroit ’67. Additional plays include Pipeline, Sunset Baby, Blood at the Root, and Confederates. She is also the Tony-nominated book writer of the musical Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations. Morisseau is an alumna of The Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, Women’s Project Lab and Lark Playwrights Workshop, and has developed work at Sundance Lab, Williamstown Theatre Festival and Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference. Additional awards include the Steinberg Playwright Award, NBFT August Wilson Playwriting Award, Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama, two Obie Awards, and the Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship. Morisseau is also a MacArthur Genius Grant Fellow.

We have a few copies of the play available at the Library for the Performing Arts, but if you are looking for additional copies, the Drama Book Shop has graciously set aside copies of the play at a discounted price of 10% off for Play Club attendees. (While supplies last.) Please visit the Drama Book Shop to purchase your copy.
