About this Event

About

To all appearances, Lily Sedako is an unexceptional retiree - a seventy-something single woman living in Chicago, her days filled with the routine tasks of normal life. But underneath that exterior lies a remarkable past as a former CIA field agent. Now 20 years later, her past is at risk of being exposed by someone unknown.

A powerful novel about love, power, corruption, aging, trust...and revenge, Bad Company reaffirms Sara Paretsky’s place as one of the pre-eminent crime writers of our time. Since the introduction of her iconic V.I. Warshawski series, Paretsky continues to challenge and transform the mystery genre. Fellow Chicagoan and mystery writer Lori Rader-Day sits down with Paretsky for a wide-ranging conversation on her new novel, her process and sources of inspiration.

Copies of Bad Company will be available for sale and book signing following the event.

Biographies

Hailed by the Washington Post as “the definition of perfection in the genre,” Sara Paretsky is the New York Times bestselling author of numerous novels, including the renowned V.I. Warshawski series, first appearing in 1982’s Indemnity Only. Paretsky’s Warshawski series has since transformed the mystery genre, showing woman as compelling main characters, and not just a vamp or a victim. In 1986 she created Sisters in Crime, a worldwide organization focused on equity and inclusion in crime publishing, which earned her Ms. Magazine’s 1987 Woman of the Year award. Her many awards include the Cartier Diamond Dagger Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Crime Writers’ Association and the 2011 Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award.

Lori Rader-Day is the Edgar Award−nominated and Agatha, Anthony, and Mary Higgins Clark Award−winning author of The Death of Us, Death at Greenway, The Lucky One, Under a Dark Sky, and others. Lori cochairs the crime fiction readers’ event Midwest Mystery Conference and teaches creative writing at Northwestern University.
