SANGJARU: Korean Roots Meet Gypsy Swing, Rock & PopSeptember 25 • Rainier Arts Center • Seattle
With special guest Iris Kymm
South Korea’s music scene is much bigger than K-pop.
Seoul-based trio Sangjaru takes centuries-old Korean rhythms and instruments and throws them into a wildly contemporary mix of gypsy swing, rock, improvisation, acoustic grooves, and pop. Guitar meets janggu, while the deep, gritty sound of the ajaeng collides with driving rhythms and explosive percussion.
Joining Sangjaru is Iris Kymm, a Seattle-based Korean indie singer-songwriter whose music moves between alternative pop, R&B, jazz, rock, and electronic sounds. Working between Seattle and Seoul, Kymm brings together influences from both sides of the Pacific with powerful vocals and deeply personal songwriting.
Together, they offer two distinct perspectives on the exciting new sounds emerging from Korea and its global creative community.
