About this Event
An unlikely friendship. Two extraordinary stories.
This March Break, Malachy and the Elephant brings a little-known piece of Toronto’s history to the stage through puppetry, imagination and gentle humour.
Malachy, an Irish immigrant serving time in Toronto’s Don J*il, is sent to work at the Riverdale Zoo. There, he meets Princess Rita, an elephant far from her home. Their lives are very different, but both know what it means to be confined. An unexpected friendship begins to grow.
With St. Patrick’s Day also falling during March Break, Malachy’s Irish roots give this story a timely connection to the season. His experience offers a chance to reflect on Irish immigrant stories within Toronto’s history, alongside a touching account of companionship far from home.
For families with children ages 12 and up, this family activity combines live theatre with local history. The story leaves room for conversation about friendship, freedom and belonging, bringing fun and education together through thoughtful storytelling.
Planning a children’s activity for older kids or looking for an event for family members to enjoy together? This 55-minute performance offers a shared outing with a story to talk about afterwards. Tickets also make a thoughtful birthday gift or an affordable Christmas gift for someone who enjoys puppetry, theatre and Toronto history.
