About this Event
Japanese puppetry, up close.
This March Break, enjoy a traditional Japanese puppet performance by Nishikawa Ryuji at Puppet Festival Mississauga.
Seated on a small wheeled platform, the puppeteer uses their hands and feet to control the puppet. Each turn, step and gesture takes careful coordination, creating the remarkable impression that the character moves on its own.
Known as Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo, this technique developed in the mid-19th century in Hachioji, Tokyo. It is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Ryuji brings this tradition to the stage with the Nishikawa Koryu Troupe, combining expressive performance with intricate costumes and precise puppet manipulation.
Watching how it works is part of the enjoyment. You can follow the puppeteer’s movements while taking in the characters and storytelling. After the performance, stay for a puppet demonstration and a conversation with the artists. See the mechanisms up close and ask questions about the work behind the show.
For parents and grandparents planning a children’s activity, this family event brings fun and education together through live theatre and Japanese craftsmanship. It’s a family activity that gives you something to enjoy together—and plenty to talk about on the way home.
Tickets also make a thoughtful birthday gift or an affordable Christmas gift for someone who enjoys theatre, puppetry or Japanese culture.
