🧠 Lecture: "Is It Ethical to Lie to a Dating Algorithm?"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Asil M. Martinez
Join us for an eye-opening evening as Dr. Asil M. Martinez uses dating apps as an accessible case study to explore algorithmic bias and algorithmic fairness. You’ll learn how supposedly neutral technologies can reproduce racial inequality, why “treating everyone the same” often isn’t truly fair, and how design choices in algorithms shape our romantic lives in ways we rarely see.
Dr. Martinez will also ask a provocative question: when is “gaming the system” a form of morally permissible resistance to unfair algorithms rather than simple dishonesty? Drawing on their expertise in ethics and the philosophy of race, they will unpack issues of racial identity, non-paradigmatic racial identities, and contested identity claims, connecting these topics to everyday digital experiences.
Dr. Asil M. Martinez is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at South Puget Sound Community College and holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. They teach ethics and business ethics, develop philosophy curricula for jails and prisons, and are committed to making philosophy engaging and accessible beyond the classroom.
