Traditional Turkish Shadow Puppet Making Workshop
Learn about traditional Turkish shadow theatre and create your own Karagöz and Hacivat shadow puppets through a guided hands-on activity.
Join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll explore one of Türkiye's most cherished performing arts and create your own shadow puppets inspired by the colourful characters of Karagöz and Hacivat.
Through this creative experience, participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of Turkish shadow theatre while bringing its traditional characters to life.
About Karagöz & Hacivat
Karagöz is a traditional form of Turkish shadow theatre featuring colourful figures projected onto a screen using a light source. At the heart of the performances are two beloved characters: Karagöz and Hacivat, whose humorous conversations, misunderstandings and playful exchanges have entertained audiences for centuries.
Traditionally performed during Ramadan, festivals and community celebrations, Karagöz brings together storytelling, humour, music and visual art.
In 2009, Karagöz was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its cultural significance and role in preserving Turkish storytelling traditions.

- For Adults: Saturday, November 7, 2026 / 3 - 6 PM
- For Children (Ages 10–14): Saturday, November 21, 2026 / 3 - 6 PM

🎭 Workshop Activities: Participants will learn about traditional Turkish shadow theatre and create their own Karagöz and Hacivat shadow puppets through a guided hands-on activity.
🎨 Materials: All workshop materials will be provided.
🎟️ Fee: CA$8 per participant, including all materials. Eventbrite processing fees are additional.
Registration: Spaces are limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Reserve your spot through Eventbrite.
Withdrawal and Refund Policy
You may request a refund up to two days before the workshop. Eventbrite processing fees may not be refundable. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made one day before or on the day of the workshop.

Photography and videography may take place during the event. By attending, you acknowledge that you or your child may appear in photographs and videos used for the Toronto Yunus Emre Institute's documentation and promotional materials.
