About this Event

Do you love film photography, but your spouse/friends/dog are sick of you talking to them about it all the time?
Do you have more undeveloped film than you do spare hours in a month?
Are you tired of inverting Patterson tanks alone in your bathroom?
Do you wish you knew how to develop film at home, but haven't had time to learn how?
Then rejoice! SPC Dev Party 6 is right around the corner!

SPC's Dev Party is an opportunity for local film shooters to come together, build skills and community, and share in the process of DIY film development. Newcomers get hands on with film development, and experienced home developers can take advantage of the studio's ample space and equipment.

Throughout the event, volunteers are available to assist, teach, and coordinate development batches. Please arrive early if you have film to develop, and especially of you're new and looking to learn. Volunteer time is limited, batches can back up, and this allows as many peoples to develop as much film of their film as possible.

Color Film Development

Development of 35mm and 130 color negative film (process C-41) is available during the event. Film is batched into the studio's JOBO, and processed on a first come first serve basis. We will process as much film as time allows, with an eye to making sure everyone who wants to get some film developed has a chance.

  • At 1PM, the queue closes! The final few film batches will be loaded, and all other film will go home unprocessed. Arrive early!
  • A maximum of 3 rolls of 35mm film or 4 rolls of 120 film may queued per person. Once your film has finished development, you will be allowed to submit additional rolls.
  • We will not be scanning film during the event. You must be prepared to scan the film yourself, or take it to a lab, after the event.
  • Continuous film sleeves are available for taking home both 35mm and 120 film.
  • Please acknowledge that film development is a sensitive process. Individual results may vary, and despite best efforts, the possibility exists for film to be damaged or destroyed during processing. We offer no guarentee of successful development.
  • Color film development is C41 only. We do not offer slide film (E-6) or cine film (ECN-2) development. You're welcome to cross process Cine film if that's your thing, just let us know so we can wash the remjet off any ECN-2 cinema film before develop.

Black & White Film Development

Unlike the color film process, B&W development times vary with different film and developer combinations. To ensure as consistent and satisfactory results as possible, B&W film will be developed in small inversion batches by hand, by you! We have hand tanks, will provide black and white developer, and are happy to help anyone who wants assistance as time and volunteer availability allows.

Let us know if you're interested in a particular developer, and the hosts at Flying Camera Studio will see what they can do. You are also encouraged to bring your own B&W developer.

BYOG (Bring Your Own Gear)

Experienced film developers are strongly encouraged to bring along their own film developing gear and chemistry! This can be a contribution to the larger group effort, a way of running small personal batches, or just a chance to compare methods with others. We typically have C41 covered, but you are still free to bring your own color developing setup if you wish.

If you would like to run your own batches, we will do our best to provide you with a space to do so. Please note that resources are limited, and so you will need to coordinate with others to avoid overuse of space, sinks, and the drying cabinet.

Please keep inventory of everything you bring, and label items with your name and contact information when possible.

Registration, Payment, Building Access, and More...

We ask that anyone participating make a single $15 payment to Flying Camera Studios at the time of the event. This helps cover the cost of chemistry, equipment, and helps pay the rent. If you're unable to do so due to financial hardship, let us know and we're happy to accommodate.

  • No payment is due at the time of registration, it just helps us with planning.
  • Cash and Venmo are accepted.

Access to the building and studio is provided by a time locked keycode, which will be shared with registered attendees on the day of the event.

Parking & Transportation: Street parking is free on Sundays, but limited. We recommend you arrive early (It's a great excuse to walk around and take some photos!). Several paid parking garages are also nearby. For public transportation, light rail, buses, the WA State Ferry, and the water taxi all have stops nearby.

The Studio

Flying Camera Studio, in the Good Arts building in Pioneer Square, graciously volunteer their space for this event. The space provides access to most everything a home developer could ever want. Dark tents, stacks of film reels and tanks, two JOBO rotary film processors, a darkroom sink, a rapid film drying cabinet, and more!

It also features some truly gargantuan large format equipment, which our host Scott uses to capture stunning images of his clients. If you're lucky, you may just get to see him in action! Feel free to ask him about the studio, large format, or shooting alternative process portraits.
