Circular Craft: Designing with Waste
Thursday 14th 3 - 4.30pm
A talk and presentation with designers from India and Sri Lanka - Iro Iro, Alke and Rice & Carry - of how waste materials are being crafted to create innovative designed products, waste solutions and uplift local communities.
For London Craft Week May 11-17th, Friday Sari Project (FSP) presents a curated store bringing a new wave of designers working with heritage crafts from India and Sri Lanka. Discover designers whose practices are rooted in heritage craft and modern design thinking.
Founded in London in 2018, Friday Sari Project is the first platform of its kind dedicated to showcasing contemporary and emerging designers from India and Sri Lanka and redefining perceptions of contemporary design and culture from the Indian subcontinent. Along with a curated programme of events, FSP acts as curator, exhibitor and advocate, bringing together an ever-evolving selection of designers and makers who elevate traditional skills, materials and processes.
This special London Craft Week presentation foregrounds heritage techniques including natural dyeing, hand embroidery, applique, batik, beeralu lace, Himalayan wool and hand weaving-craft practices deeply embedded in cultural knowledge, place and community. Across garments, jewellery and accessories, these techniques are reimagined through contemporary forms, reflecting a commitment to slow, sustainable fashion and thoughtful production.
Many of the featured designers work in close collaboration with artisan communities, honouring process, material integrity and the human hand. Rather than positioning craft as static or nostalgic, the showcase presents it as a living, adaptive practice-experimental, responsive and relevant to contemporary design conversations.
“Friday Sari Project was founded to showcase and platform contemporary design from India and Sri Lanka. For London Craft Week, we wanted to focus on heritage craft meeting design, hand in hand carried through communities, materials and collaboration, reimagined for the present.”Mehala Ford, Founder, Friday Sari Project
Friday Sari Project store offers visitors an opportunity to engage with objects that carry stories of heritage, innovation and cultural exchange. It invites a deeper appreciation of craft as both technique and knowledge.
As part of London Craft Week, this programme continues FSP’s mission to connect audiences with a nuanced and forward-looking vision of South Asian design—grounded in tradition, yet confidently global.
