About this Event

Diabetes, Research & Our Community – World Diabetes Day 2026

Join us for an afternoon of awareness, learning, free refreshments and community engagement at Newham University Hospital!

Often referred to as “the silent killer”, diabetes can have serious consequences if left undetected or poorly managed. Yet, with greater awareness, earlier diagnosis and the right support, we can take important steps towards preventing type 2 diabetes, managing the condition and improving long-term health outcomes.

So, how much do we really know about diabetes? Who is most affected, how do we ensure everyone has access to quality care, and what can research do to change the picture?

To mark World Diabetes Day 2026, we invite you to join us for Diabetes, Research & Our Community – a community-focused event bringing together local residents, patients, families, carers, healthcare professionals and researchers.

Whether you are living with diabetes, supporting a loved one, concerned about your health or simply want to learn more, this event is for you.

Led by Professor Sarah Finer and the research team at Newham University Hospital, this event aims to raise awareness of diabetes, highlight the importance of research and encourage meaningful conversations about improving diabetes prevention, diagnosis and care.

What can you expect?

Enjoy an afternoon featuring informative talks, interactive activities, patient perspectives, research presentations and opportunities to connect with others.

Highlights include:

  • Diabetes awareness and prevention: Learn about diabetes, its risk factors and the importance of early diagnosis.
  • Healthy eating and nutrition: Explore how food choices can support diabetes prevention and management, including an interactive diet quiz.
  • Patient experiences: Hear personal perspectives and learn more about the impact of diabetes on individuals and families.
  • Health inequalities: Understand why certain communities experience greater challenges in diabetes diagnosis and care.
  • Diabetes research: Discover research initiatives and how research can contribute to better understanding, treatments and health outcomes.
  • Community discussion: Meet healthcare professionals, researchers and local residents, ask questions and share your perspectives.

Refreshments will also be available, giving you the opportunity to enjoy some food, connect with others and take part in the afternoon's activities.

Why does this matter?

Diabetes research and healthcare must reflect the needs of the communities they serve. Differences in access to healthcare, awareness, diagnosis and treatment can contribute to unequal health outcomes.

By bringing the public and research community together, we hope to encourage greater awareness, promote collaboration and highlight opportunities for people to become involved in health research.

Who should attend?

Everyone is welcome! This event is particularly relevant to:

  • People living with diabetes or at risk of developing the condition.
  • Family members, friends and carers.
  • Local residents and community members.
  • Healthcare professionals and students.
  • Researchers and anyone interested in diabetes research and health inequalities.

You do not need to have diabetes or a medical background to attend.
