Women, Talent & Tyranny: A Victorian Walking Tour of Bonchurch
Bonchurch was home to women of extraordinary talent - performers, painters, poets, and fierce hearts, each leaving her mark on this small village.
Walk with us to meet women who performed before Queen Victoria, whose paintings stopped exhibition crowds in their tracks, whose poetry came close to winning the Poet Laureateship - and one who crossed the Solent bearing red roses for a poet she loved, who never knew.
Some were celebrated in their lifetimes. Some were overlooked, and are only now getting their due. Some were simply taken too soon. These are stories of brilliance, ambition, and the different paths a remarkable life can take. Bonchurch remembers them all - come and meet them.

Type of Walk: Linear
Start Location: Meet at the church iron gate at the entrance to The Pitts, Bonchurch Shute, Bonchurch, Ventnor, PO38 1NT
Finish Location: At the 11th century ancient church.
We walk down the 101 steps which is quite steep.
Pace of Walk: Gentle - This walk will follow a gentle pace.
Walk grade: Moderate - Varying landscape with more challenging slopes. Stiles and steps to be expected en route, suitable for anyone who is reasonably active.
Mobility level: Suitable for a person with sufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but would benefit from fixtures and fittings to aid balance.

- Dress warmly, it can be chilly even on sunny days.
