The evening symposium celebrates the launch of A Digital Atlas of Jamaican Music in London and Windrush Cultural Heritage, an important research and digital heritage initiative exploring the extraordinary contribution of Jamaican music to London and Britain's wider cultural landscape.
Initiated by Professor Enrico Bonadio and David Katz, the Digital Atlas brings together academic research, cultural knowledge, community memory, archival material and digital mapping to document the people, places, institutions and creative movements that have shaped Jamaican music in Britain.
From ska, rocksteady and reggae to dub, sound-system culture and contemporary musical innovation, the symposium will examine Jamaican music's influence on London's cultural, social and artistic development.
The evening will feature the presentation and launch of the Digital Atlas, contributions from researchers and cultural practitioners, a chaired symposium discussion and audience questions.
It will also explore the future of digital cultural heritage, oral histories, collecting, archives and collaboration between universities, museums and communities.
