Lachlan Gilbert (B.Ed., MAncHist)Teacher/Firefighter
Abstract: Have you ever wondered about the origins of organised emergency services? Long before modern fire brigades, the city of Rome had its own dedicated firefighting force: the Vigiles. This presentation explores the origins of the Vigiles, their organisation, techniques, and equipment, and examines the lasting influence they have had on emergency services. By comparing ancient Roman firefighting methods with modern practices, we will see how many of the challenges faced by Roman firefighters remain familiar to emergency services today. We will also examine the actions of Nero during the Great Fire of Rome and the role of the Vigiles in responding to what should have been their finest hour.
