About this Event
STTARS invites you to join us in a one-day workshop ‘Core Concepts in Supporting Children, Young People and their Families who have Refugee, or Refugee-like, Experiences’ on 20th January 2027.
This January workshop is particularly aimed at those working in schools and brought to you by the STTARS Children and Youth Team.
This workshop explores the impact of traumatic events related to the refugee experience on learning, behaviour and relationships, and responding in a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive way. It explores how to respond in ways that promotes recovery and fosters feelings of trust, safety and control while minimising the risk of retraumatising students.
Topics to be explored include:
- The Refugee Experience
- The Refugee Experience and Schooling
- Resettlement and Cultural Transition
- Impacts of trauma on the brain, body, behaviour and relationships
- Trauma Responsive Practice: Classroom Strategies
- Supporting Belonging, Dignity, Empowerment and Voice
- Wellbeing when supporting young people affected by trauma and injustice
