THE VELVET REVOLUTION:FROM STUDENT PROTESTS TO THE CZECH REPUBLIC TODAY
What really happened in November 1989? And how much did the Velvet Revolution change the lives of ordinary Czechs?
I was just 10 years old in 1989, so this is not only a story I’ve studied — it’s also part of the world I grew up in. I’ll be happy to share my personal memories and stories, from the revolutionary days of November 1989 to the fascinating, chaotic, and sometimes wild 1990s that followed.
As the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution approaches, join me for a walk in the footsteps of the students who marched from Albertov towards Národní třída on 17 November 1989 — a demonstration that became a turning point in Czech history.
🕊️ We’ll explore more than just the events of 1989:
✨ Why students stood up for democracy and human rights in both 1939 and 1989.
🌍 How the international situation and the collapse of communist regimes across Central and Eastern Europe shaped the revolution.
👥 Who were the key figures of the Velvet Revolution — and what do we really know about the theories and controversies surrounding it?
💰 How the transition from communism to capitalism transformed the Czech economy and society, from the turbulent 1990s to today.
🔎 And, most importantly: What hopes did the revolution bring, what challenges remain, and where are the Czechs heading today?
Let’s look beyond the familiar stories, revisit the turning points of modern Czech history, and discover how the legacy of 1989 continues to shape the country we live in today.
