An evening of community and celebration - uncovering the history of the UK's first Black lesbian and gay centre.
About this Event

In collaboration with the LGBT+ and BAME University of Manchester staff networks, we are hosting a special evening of celebration with a film screening of Veronica McKenzie's documentary film Under Your Nose.

The film explores the history of the UK's first Black lesbian and gay centre and explores how a group of Black and Asian LGBT activists in London came together to create a much needed space for the community.

We will be joined on the evening by film director Veronia McKenzie for a short Q&A following the film.

There will be light, hot refreshments served from 6pm - 6.30pm

Film synopsis:
40 years ago a group of activists came together with one aim: to open a centre for the black LGBTQ+ community. Against the backdrop of 1980s politics, the rise of Thatcher ism, and the AIDS epidemic, they started on the path. Drawing on archival materials Under Your Nose is a feature documentary dedicated to those trailblazers who facing hostility, and often personal danger offered hope and a lifeline to many others. Their legacy is still apparent today.
