About this Event
On 25th November, we will be exploring the UCD campus after dark in an informal guided group. Georgia MacMillan, an expert on the topics of light pollution and dark sky development from Mayo Dark Sky Park, Dark Sky Ireland, and the University of Galway, will lead the walk, which will introduce the impacts of artificial lighting on biodiversity, human and animal health, and the night sky. The event is conducted as part of UCD's One Health Festival, which seeks to highlight the interdependency of human, animal, and environmental health.
We will also conduct some citizen science together to map artificial light usage on UCD campus, i.e. to observe whether light in the environment is useful or excessive, and the quality of the night sky overhead.
We will initially meet at the O'Brien Centre for Science (room details to be communicated later) for a short introduction to the topic, followed by the walk. The walk will take approximately 60 minutes, with light refreshments provided afterwards in the same location in the O'Brien Centre for Science.
The walk is open to the general public but limited to teenagers and adults. Spaces are limited so make sure to register quickly!
