About this Event

Trans+Aural/Trans Scenographics brings practices of sound, scenography, and performance, and experiences of transness into conversation.

We ask what transing offers as a mode of enquiry and critique for expanding scenographic thinking, and as a methodology for new fields of practice. Through shared affective processes of sensing, resonating and re/dis/embodying public, sonic, and ecological spaces we propose speculative worlds and un/worlds of trans experience. We each draw on our creative specialisms to present a polyvocal and layered performance-led seminar session.

Nic reflects on how trans-scenographic material and ecological orientations offer strategies for un- and re-mapping relationalities of spaces, bodies, and worlds, unfolding through practices of attentiveness to/with more-than-human scenographic collaborators. Nic’s PhD research bringing together trans and scenographic critical perspectives and creative methods (recently published in RiDE - https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13569783.2025.2570691 )

Danny offers their research on sound and listening practices engaged by trans performance makers. They will listen-in to how sound design becomes a space for agitation, affirmation, resistance and community. Danny’s upcoming publications include “Monsters, cats, and vampire fingers: trans+auditioning headphone performance in the work of Ocean Stefan, Niya B and Allucquére Rosanne "Sandy" Stone” in New Intermedialities in Theatre and Performance: From Minutiae to Magnitude, edited by Lynne Kendrick and Yaron Shyldkrot for Routledge, “Trans+ sound design in Wet Mess’ Testo” for The Drama Review and “You are valid and you are loved”: Headphone performance as trans technology for affirmation, expression and resistance” in Contemporary Theatre Review edition titled "In-yer-Ear: Performing in the Headphone era”.

Nic Farr is an artist and researcher working in queer and trans performance and scenography. Nic is currently completing an AHRC-funded PhD titled The Scenographics of Queer Placemaking at Central, supervised by Dr David Shearing and Professor Bryce Lease. Nic’s research uses expanded scenography as a framework through which to examine queer and trans approaches to place. Nic is also an artist and designer specialising in collaborative and site-specific practices and has exhibited work in the UK and internationally, in Italy and Iceland. Nic work’s with SHYBAIRN Theatre Company to create performance as climate activism, alongside artists, academics, and activists.

Dr Danny Scott has been working in sound-led performance and sound art for the past twenty-five years; as an artist, a researcher, and educator. They create immersive and participatory installations, audio-visual works, music and live performance. I often work collaboratively and value processes that foster community, belonging and becoming. Listening is at the centre of my practice. Currently, Danny is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Centre for Performance, Technology, and Equity (PTEQ). They are developing methodologies for a sound- and listening-led scenography, engaging what theorist Salome Voegelin calls the “sonic sensibility” to guide strategies of listening and sound-making, towards multi-sensory, poly-somatic works that could result in an image or an object as much as sound design. Danny is also exploring contemporary discourse and practices around trans* performance making with a focus on trans-ness as a space for critiquing, repurposing and disrupting normative practices in technology and sound.
