A live musical performance from Charlie Maguire and the Minnesota Premiere of Dust Bowls & Jewish Souls: Another Side of Woody Guthrie create a one-of-a-kind evening exploring Woody Guthrie’s music, his surprising Jewish connections, and the enduring power of songs to carry stories across generations.Much is known about Woody Guthrie, the iconic American folksinger who wrote “This Land Is Your Land” and profoundly influenced generations of musicians, including Bob Dylan. Far less known is the role Jewish culture, Yiddish poetry, and family played in shaping his life and music.
In this illuminating documentary, filmmaker Steven Pressman explores Guthrie’s marriage to Marjorie Greenblatt and his close relationship with her mother, acclaimed Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt. Oklahoma populism and New York Jewish immigrant culture proved unexpectedly compatible, inspiring songs and a creative exchange that expanded Guthrie’s ideas about family, justice, and belonging. Featuring interviews with his children Arlo and Nora, along with rich archival footage and recordings, Dust Bowls & Jewish Souls uncovers a fascinating chapter in both American musical history and Jewish cultural life.
Before the film, acclaimed Minnesota folk singer Charlie Maguire performs a live set of Woody Guthrie songs, drawing audiences into the music and storytelling tradition at the heart of the documentary.
