About this Event
What if the candy shop of your childhood were made entirely of paper?
Toronto paper artist Alex Dunsmuir (freshcutpaperstudio.com) brings the colourful world of 1970s and ’80s candy back to life in Sweet Reams, a nostalgic sweet-shop-inspired exhibition at Northern Contemporary gallery in Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood.
The exhibition features oversized, hyperrealistic recreations of retro candy packages, including Pop Rocks, Popeye, Thrills, Chiclets, Sweetarts, Lucky Elephant, Reese’s and Fun Dip. Several include the candy itself, intricately recreated in paper.
Visitors will also discover more than 100 handmade paper chocolate truffles, candy jars filled with paper sweets that look good enough to eat, layered-paper recreations of vintage candy advertisements, limited-edition prints and postcards of handmade candy works, There’s even a retrofitted candy machine that dispenses miniature art prints instead of candy, including Golden Tickets that allow you to select a mini art card or print of your choice for free!
Throughout the exhibition, visitors can also take part in hands-on paper-confection workshops and try creating their own.
Dates: Wednesday, September 30 – Thursday, October 6, 2026
Location: Northern Contemporary gallery, 420 Roncesvalles Ave, Toronto.
*The exhibition is open every day from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
