How can we sensitively and productively work with colonial films in ways that foreground decolonial praxis and care in the archive?
About this Event

Wellcome Collection and the ‘Colonial Reels: Histories and Afterlives of Colonial Film Collections’ research project invite you to join us for a one-day experiential workshop on ‘Somatic Research Methods and Colonial Film' focusing on films in Wellcome Collection’s holdings.

Colonial reels are often embedded in circuits of extractivism, violence, racism and erasure. This workshop will explore the use of somatic research methods as a strategy to foreground care and decolonial praxis whilst working with colonial film collections.

The workshop will be facilitated by members of the ‘Colonial Reels’ project team: Naluwembe Binaisa and Haroon Forde, postdoctoral researchers; Emma Sandon, Co-investigator; and Angela Saward, Research development lead, Wellcome Collection.

In a safe, confidential and relaxed setting the workshop will include:

  • Negotiating the archive: short practice-informed talks from the ‘Colonial Reels’ project team
  • Somatic research methods to foreground care in the archive
  • The potential of somatic research methods as an avenue for decolonial praxis
  • Watching and discussing colonial films to build sensory visual ‘somatic maps’
  • Reflecting on the potential to incorporate somatic methods in your research practice

The films for the workshop have been carefully selected by the project and Wellcome Collection teams.

Please be advised films may:

  • Include personal details of living individuals
  • Be upsetting or distressing
  • Be explicit or graphic
  • Include objects and images of objects decontextualised in a way that is offensive to the originating culture

This workshop is for early career researchers, on or after their PhD research journeys, from any discipline. Participants must be 18 years or older. All craft materials will be provided.
