Mirror awakens your own story. Tarkovsky’s masterpiece closes SIFFA 2026 - a fragile world of memory, love and time.
About this Event

Ranked eighth among the greatest films of all time in the 2022 Sight and Sound directors’ poll, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Mirror continues to shape the way the world sees cinema.

Ingmar Bergman recognised in Tarkovsky an artist who had discovered a new cinematic language. His influence reaches across generations and borders, resonating in the work of Terrence Malick, Béla Tarr, Lars von Trier and Claire Denis. Across just seven feature films, he transformed what cinema could express - giving memory, dreams and spiritual longing an extraordinary life on screen.

In times of profound uncertainty, we invite you to look into the Mirror.

To linger with the faces, places and voices that have made us who we are. To ask what we carry from the past, what we pass on to our children, and what remains precious when the world around us feels fragile.

SIFFA 2026 closes with Mirror (1975) - a work of startling intimacy in which one man’s memories become a meeting place for generations.

A mother waits. Wind passes through a field. A house burns. Childhood returns in fragments, vivid with the feelings that time has failed to erase. Family scenes intertwine with wartime archive footage and the poetry of Tarkovsky’s father, Arseny. Private memory meets the forces of history; love and loss travel through both.

Tarkovsky’s genius makes these encounters feel intimately familiar. His images awaken something we may have carried for years without finding words for it: the ache of an absent parent, the mystery of childhood, the desire to return home.

For our Fragile World edition, Mirror offers a deeply resonant closing experience. It asks us to give our attention to the fragile lives within history — and to recognise how much of one another we hold within ourselves.

Join us for a closing film that continues long after the screen goes dark.
