Each of these dinner party gatherings will feature a selection of beverages, a salad, and an entree prepared by the instructor. Students may opt in to contributing a dessert if they would like, but this is not required. Each class will include a brief presentation about the history and cultural context of the meal, and facilitated group discussion of a specific artifact (book chapter or album lyrics) and the themes presented in the assigned readings.
Students will be given access to digital, scanned copies of the reading selection. (Note these scans will come from the instructor’s personal copy of the text and will include the instructor’s marginalia – comments, underlines, brackets, etcetera). Students are also encouraged to purchase a copy of each book, and to engage with it in its entirety.
This series is an exploration of the philosophy of humanism, and the humanities, the field of study that blends history and literature, exploring in artful ways what it means to be human and how to live. Continue reading for a broader definition of the humanities and humanist values.
While this class functions as a cohesive series, it is also available as individual classes.
This month's "artifact" will be Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet by Thich Nhat Hanh and the meal will be chickpea coconut curry (vegan, gluten free).
The specific excerpt will be shared with you after you register.
