The raised surface that remains uncarved is known as the relief. This is what is inked and pressed onto the material to create the image. In other words, it’s carving your own stamp!
We’ll start by going over the basic principles and then you’ll have time to practice and come up with your own design (or choose from some provided examples). You’ll learn how to transfer your design to the carving block, carving techniques, and how to ink and print your design, with a special focus on hand-printing onto fabric.
We'll primarily be focusing on printing in one color, but there is the possibility of exploring techniques for using multiple blocks and colors. Ideally, you’ll be walking out of class with a stamp (or two!), a printed tea towel, and ideas of how to continue creating at home.
The instructor will provide the carving tools and carving block, ink, and one tea towel per student. You’re welcome to bring more fabric items (t-shirt, bandana, tote bag, patch, etc.) or cards/paper if you’re interested in printing more items.
Please wear dark clothing and/or clothing you don’t mind potentially getting ink on, snacks if you’d like, and anything else to make yourself comfortable!
No previous experience necessary and all skill levels welcome! (All ages welcome, however we will be using somewhat sharp tools to carve, so children should have some adult supervision.)
