"Cylinder Spectrum" & "Polygon Plexus" are two visual art exhibitions by Toronto artist Angela Julian (Native Torontonian and OCADU graduate). Both shows are located inside the Sun Gallery at 918 Bathurst Arts & Culture Center. The collected works are a group of large scale colorful abstract paintings done in plaster. They range in size, scale, shape, and number, but they are all tied together through the mediums of plaster and acrylic paint.
On one side of the gallery is the show "Cylinder Spectrum", which is a group of acrylic paintings done on distinctly rounded canvases that were covered in layers of mixed-media and plaster. These are shown both as individual works and presented as a group that makeup a larger installation. The circular nature of the canvases and surfaces links the entire show by their rounded nature. On the opposite side of the gallery is the show "Polygon Plexus" which is a group of hand-made canvases and surfaces that were created to form irregular shapes. These outer shapes are deliberately jagged, pointed, elongated, and heavily textured surfaces, and each painting is covered with a either a geometric or abstract pattern. Both exhibitions demonstrate a variety of different color schemes and embrace vibrant, highly-saturated colors.
The Sun Gallery is the twin space to the Star Gallery on the property, and it is an airy and brilliantly lit space with wide sky-lights that allow for beautiful natural day-light. The gallery space is located at 918 Bathurst Arts & Culture Center in the Annex neighborhood (Bloor / Bathurst area). The center is a historic building in Toronto and was formerly a Buddhist Temple before it became a venue for Arts and Culture. It has an in-house audience that ranges from both broad to local. With many disappearing gallery spaces in Toronto, it proudly boasts its survival and longevity as a space within the landscape of an ever-changing metropolis city. The interior of 918 Bathurst is a mix of modern design elements in conjunction with its preserved historic architecture, notably the beautiful wooden beams of its ceilings. These are two very fun shows and run until the end of October, 2026.
