Talk Abstract

Introduction: Research has reported iatrogenic effects of psychiatric hospital admissions for individuals with repeated self-harm at risk for suicide. However, at times of increased suicidal ideation out-patient care for these individuals may be associated with increased risk for completed suicide. In the Netherlands, the Brief Admission (BA) intervention has been used for three decades as a crisis management model. However, BA has never been standardized or evaluated by RCT for this population.

Aim: To develop a standardized version of Brief Admission for individuals with self-harm at risk for suicide.

Methods: Literature search and qualitative studies on Brief admission in order to find the core component who are essential for the effectiveness of the method.

Results: Core components of Brief Admission were described in a standardized procedure, formulated in a training manual and a fidelity measure (1). Videos for core interventions were made in order to promote effective education. Education was developed for clinicians working at a ward providing Brief admission, physicians and administrative staff, responsible for the care of the individual, and other staff working at the clinic providing Brief Admission.

Conclusion: A standardized training for clinics aiming to implement Brief Admission has been developed, as well as a measure to ensure adherence to the model through evaluating treatment fidelity. The standardization promotes future possibilities to evaluate the method in larger studies, such as the Brief Admission Skåne Randomized Controlled Trial.
