WHAT IS PHILLYPOP? PhillyPOP is a meetup group for discussing popular music–it’s like a book club for playlists. Every month we listen to a playlist, then we meet in person to talk about it. Each playlist has a theme, and attendees are encouraged (but not required) to contribute songs that fit the theme as they understand it. It's a great way to connect with local music superfans and hear stuff you wouldn't have otherwise. NEXT EVENT: We did Halloween music for last October's PhillyPOP meeting, so this year I thought we'd focus on something equally ominous--if not outright "scary"--to mark the occasion. Pop culture has been fascinated with the seven deadly sins for decades, from the 1995 film Se7en to the 2010s anime The Seven Deadly Sins to the early 90s MTV documentary on the subject, and every take is a little different. In terms of music, I can't think of many songs (or any, really) that address all seven at once, which is why we're gonna take them one at a time.
This month's challenge--should you choose to accept it--is to contribute seven songs, each of which exemplifies one of the seven deadly sins: envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath. It may be more difficult to find songs for some sins than others, but I encourage you to be creative in how you interpret each sin. The starter playlist includes four songs per sin, and it shows off a wide range of perspectives--some songs are celebratory, while others harshly judge the sin and/or sinner. These first 28 songs are grouped by sin (the order I put them in shouldn't be hard to guess), but after that they'll all be mixed together based on the order each submitter decides to put them in. I'm not religious in the least but I'm expecting a spirited discussion.
I suppose you could send fewer than seven tracks, but where's the fun in that? I know my regulars can find one for all seven. I have faith in you!
