Come and learn about the Peace Palace through presentations by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the Peace Palace Library.

Built between 1907 and 1913 as the PCA’s headquarters, the Peace Palace now houses the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Court of Justice (the principal judicial organ of the United Nations), The Hague Academy of International Law and the Carnegie Foundation.

The PCA was established by the Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, concluded at The Hague in 1899 during the first Hague Peace Conference. It was the first permanent intergovernmental organization to provide a forum for the resolution of international disputes through arbitration and other peaceful means. Today, the PCA provides services for the resolution of disputes involving various combinations of states, state entities, intergovernmental organizations, and private parties.

The ICJ is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946. The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies. The ICJ is composed of 15 judges, who are elected for terms of office of nine years by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council, and is assisted by a Registry, its administrative organ.

During a program lasting 75 minutes, the PCA, the ICJ, the Peace Palace Library and the Carnegie Foundation will welcome you at the Peace Palace and share insights into their work and the history of the Palace. This is a rare opportunity for members of the general public to see inside the Peace Palace and to learn more about the international institutions housed within it.

About the program

• All presentations and tours are scheduled at the following six starting times: 11:00, 11:40, 13:20, 14:00, 14:40 and 15:20.
• Each session lasts approximately 75 minutes.
• All registered attendees must be present for the entire program. It is not possible to leave halfway through.
• All sessions will be provided in English.

Plan Your Visit

• You must be present at least 10 minutes before starting time of the tour at the Visitors Centre to go through the security check.

• Entrance is only possible with a valid and physical passport or EU ID card/driver's license.

• Bags, cameras and mobile phones may not be taken into the Palace but can be stored in a locker in the Visitors Centre.

For one special Sunday in September, ahead of the International Day of Peace, Just Peace The Hague and more than 20 partners will open their doors to you for a look behind the scenes and to hear the stories of the people and history behind each institution.

If you are planning on visiting more organisations during the Just Peace Open Day, make sure to only book one session in a given time slot. Multiple bookings in the same time slot (at one or multiple organisations) made by the same individual will be cancelled.

Verken het Vredespaleis met de Carnegie Foundation

Kom meer te weten over het Vredespaleis aan de hand van presentaties van het Permanent Hof van Arbitrage (PCA), het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ) en de Bibliotheek van het Vredespaleis.

Het Vredespaleis, dat tussen 1907 en 1913 werd gebouwd als hoofdkwartier van het PCA, huisvest nu het Permanent Hof van Arbitrage, het Internationaal Gerechtshof (het belangrijkste juridische orgaan van de Verenigde Naties), de Haagse Academie voor Internationaal Recht en de Carnegie Foundation.

Het PCA werd opgericht door het Verdrag voor de vreedzame beslechting van internationale geschillen, dat in 1899 tijdens de eerste Haagse Vredesconferentie in Den Haag werd gesloten. Het was de eerste permanente intergouvernementele organisatie die een forum bood voor de beslechting van internationale geschillen door middel van arbitrage en andere vreedzame middelen. Tegenwoordig biedt het PCA diensten aan voor de beslechting van geschillen waarbij verschillende combinaties van staten, staatsentiteiten, intergouvernementele organisaties en particuliere partijen betrokken zijn.

Het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ) is het belangrijkste gerechtelijke orgaan van de Verenigde Naties. Het werd in juni 1945 opgericht bij het Handvest van de Verenigde Naties en begon zijn werkzaamheden in april 1946. De taak van het Hof bestaat erin om, in overeenstemming met het internationaal recht, rechtsgeschillen te beslechten die door staten aan het Hof worden voorgelegd, en advies uit te brengen over juridische kwesties die door bevoegde organen en gespecialiseerde agentschappen van de Verenigde Naties aan het Hof worden voorgelegd. Het ICJ bestaat uit 15 rechters, die voor een termijn van negen jaar worden gekozen door de Algemene Vergadering en de Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties, en wordt bijgestaan door een griffie, het administratieve orgaan.

Over het programma

• Alle presentaties en rondleidingen vinden plaats op de volgende zes starttijden: 11:00, 11:40, 13:20, 14:00, 14:40 en 15:20.

• Elke sessie duurt ongeveer 75 minuten.
• Alle geregistreerde deelnemers moeten het hele programma bijwonen. Het is niet mogelijk om halverwege te vertrekken.
• Alle sessies worden in het Engels gegeven.

Plan uw bezoek

• U moet ten minste 10 minuten voor aanvang van de rondleiding aanwezig zijn in het bezoekerscentrum om de veiligheidscontrole te doorlopen.

• Toegang is alleen mogelijk met een geldig en fysiek paspoort of EU-identiteitskaart/rijbewijs.

• Tassen, camera's en mobiele telefoons mogen niet mee het paleis in, maar kunnen worden opgeborgen in een kluisje in het bezoekerscentrum.

Den Haag staat wereldwijd bekend als de ‘Internationale Stad van Vrede & Recht’, en bijna elk monumentaal gebouw in de stad speelt een rol in het bouwen aan een rechtvaardiger en vreedzamer wereld.

Van het Vredespaleis tot het Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel, de straten van Den Haag ademen geschiedenis! Maar wat gebeurt er eigenlijk elke dag achter die grote deuren? En hoe helpen mensen die in Den Haag werken de wereld beter en eerlijker te maken? Daarom is er de Just Peace Open Dag om daar achter te komen!

Voor één speciale zondag, rond de Internationale Dag van de Vrede, in september openen Just Peace Den Haag en meer dan 20 partners hun deuren voor jou om een kijkje achter de schermen te nemen en verhalen te horen van de mensen en de geschiedenis van elke instelling.

Als je van plan bent om meerdere organisaties te bezoeken tijdens de Just Peace Open Dag, zorg er dan voor dat je slechts één sessie per tijdslot boekt. Meerdere boekingen in hetzelfde tijdslot (bij één of meerdere organisaties) door dezelfde persoon worden geannuleerd.
