About this Event
How do we give children the histories we wish someone had given us?
This interactive creative writing workshop explores how writers, parents, educators, historians, and community storytellers can transform family history, Black history, neighborhood history, archival research, and cultural memory into stories for children.
We'll explore how photographs, family stories, oral histories, letters, objects, and public records can become the starting point for picture books, early readers, poems, and stories for young people.
Participants will consider voice, age-appropriate context, historical accuracy, imagination, and how to write difficult histories without diminishing their complexity or children's capacity to understand them.
The workshop includes a story circle where participants can share a remembered family or community story before considering how it might live on the page.
No previous writing experience is required.
Bring: A memory, historical figure, family story, photograph, document, or simply a curiosity about writing the past forward.
