Ollin Yolitzli Calmecac (OYC) presents Nuevo mundo (1978, Not Rated, 1h 35min): A story of a priest set in 16th-century Mexico who converted the local pagan population to Christianity by making a statue of the Virgin Mary that resembled a native woman. After the film will be a workshop on ancestral connection and syncretism. We will explore the spiritual struggle of connecting with our culture and ancestors as we find ways to cope with globalization.
Also! Check out the ofrenda, or altar, that OyC installed on our front plaza, on the Walnut Street side of the building. An Ofrenda to the Victims of Genocide throughout History will be on the front plaza through Sat November 14.
On the contemporary Day of the Dead, some people set up altars a few days early for people who passed away in an unnatural way (accidents, disappearance, war, etc). This ofrenda will be accessible 24/7 from Wednesday October 28, 7pm through Saturday November 14. This is an annual tradition, always organized by Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac (OYC) . The ofrenda is dedicated to all of the cultures that have been affected by genocide in some way, including loss of connection, identity, practice, language, land, and life. We remember the people who died during genocide, the people who are dying right now, and those who will be displaced, and will suffer and die as a result. We also honor those who fight to preserve their cultures for themselves and for future generations. Everyone is welcome to stop by to reflect. Feel free to leave an item that reminds you of your own ancestors and loved ones. No candles [except battery operated] or flame, please.
On SATURDAY NOV 14 at 6pm, Ollin Yolitzli Calmecac will present a short Aztec dance ritual outside in front of the ofrenda. This is weather permitting.
Admission is FREE NOV 8 and 14!!
