***********************************************
The year is 2026. In the city of Metropolis, wealthy industrialists and business tycoons live a Utopian life of ease, culture and luxury in colossal skyscrapers connected by suspended streets. But there is a secret at the heart of Metropolis, and it’s a familiar one: a bleak underground city of workers, who toil endlessly in the depths to support and supply their paradise. Freder, son of the city’s planning mastermind, learns this secret when a beautiful woman one day brings a group of the worker’s children into the elite’s gardens and says “these are your brothers.” Will his love for the mysterious woman be enough to change both of their worlds?
Directed by Fritz Lang, Metropolis changed the direction of feature film forever, famous for proving the potential of science-fiction film and for its powerful and elaborate visuals. Pioneering visual effects were created for Metropolis, including cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan’s namesake Schüfftan process (in which mirrors are used to create the illusion that actors are occupying miniature sets) and a full-scale robot suit for Briggitte Helm cast from plaster then sculpted from plastic wood filler. This will be a special presentation of the 2010 restored “complete” version with live organ accompaniment by Tampa Theatre’s artist-in-residence Steven Ball.
