We’re continuing our Mardi Cinéma cycle with another essential classic of French cinema: Saint Jacques La Mecque by Coline Serreau.
🎥 Saint Jacques La Mecque
A road movie for pedestrians, “Saint-Jacques … La Mecque” chronicles the comic pilgrimage by three estranged siblings to collect an inheritance from their late mother. Heartily anti-clerical at the outset, pic shows it’s possible to develop faith (in oneself, that is) through a shared ordeal, in this case, trekking hundreds of miles to the shrine at Saint-Jacques de Campostella. Despite mostly withering local reviews, this latest optimistic look at human nature by writer-director Coline Serreau has been carried by its popular thesps and good word-of-mouth to nearly 700,000 admissions since its Oct. 12 release. Comedy fests should investigate.
