Southern Appalachia is home to over 2,500 species of plants. Relatively few, but some that are common and maybe even beautiful, can be harmful if ingested or even touched. What plants to look out for specifically and what patterns to pay attention to even if you don’t know a plant’s certain identity will be a primary focus of this class. We will explore together the representative plant families harboring poisonous plants regionally with representative pictures and literature for further analysis. We will also discuss how some plants that are potentially toxic are used in crafts and jewelry and even internal medicine for better or worse. A dialogue will ensue about how some poisonous plants also have long legacies in the realm of emotional, spiritual and in particularly shamanistic practices around the world. This is an important class for anyone who loves to explore the human plant interface scientifically and especially for those who have or work with small children and plants simultaneously.
