1815. Jean Valjean (Grégory Gadebois) sort du bagne après dix-neuf ans de travaux forcés. Pétri par la colère, le sentiment d'injustice et les violences subies, il est devenu un animal dangereux qui n'a plus confiance en rien ni personne. Un soir, après avoir été de nombreuses fois rejeté, il trouve refuge chez un prêtre. Monseigneur Bienvenu (Bernard Campan) vit là avec sa sœur (Isabelle Carré) et une unique servante (Alexandra Lamy). Surpris par la chaleur de l'accueil, Jean Valjean est ébranlé dans ses convictions criminelles. Il lui faudra choisir entre les actes définitifs que lui inspire sa haine du monde et l'acceptation de la main tendue.

Jean Valjean is released from Pr*son after nineteen years of hard labour, violence and suffering. Filled with anger and a deep sense of injustice, he has become a dangerous man who trusts no one and nothing. When he arrives in a small village in Provence, he is repeatedly turned away. Desperate, he finds refuge at the house of Bishop Bienvenu, who lives simply with his sister and a single servant. Surprised by their warm welcome, Jean Valjean feels his inner demons begin to waver. He will have to choose between the hatred that drives him and the hand held out to him.
