Led by Reequal Smith: Step into the rhythm, culture, and spirit of The Bahamas through this lively Bahamian Folk Dance workshop! Rooted in a rich blend of African movement traditions and European influences, Bahamian folk dance reflects generations of cultural exchange, storytelling, celebration, and community.
Participants will explore traditional movement through rhythmic footwork, expressive use of the torso, pelvis, and arms, partner work, and playful social dance. This workshop will introduce dances such as the Bahamian Quadrille—often associated with weddings and community celebrations—as well as elements of heel-and-toe polka and traditional ring play.
Movement will be explored alongside the infectious rhythms of Rake n’ Scrape, a distinctly Bahamian musical tradition that has long accompanied social and folk dancing throughout the islands.
Fun, energetic, and culturally immersive, this workshop invites participants to move, connect, and experience Bahamian heritage through rhythm, music, and dance. No previous dance experience is required.
*Please note that the Windborne Studio, where the workshop will be held, is not fully accessible for individuals with mobility-related accessibility needs due to stairs.
If you have any accessibility needs or require additional accommodations to support your participation, please contact us at [email protected] in advance of the workshop. We will do our best to support your needs and ensure your experience is as accessible and welcoming as possible.
