Join the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, in collaboration with eight16 creative and the creators of People of the Sacred Land, as we observe Indigenous Peoples' Day with the Denver premiere of People of the Sacred Land, a compelling new documentary examining the history, legacy and continuing realities of Indigenous land rights in Colorado and beyond.What’s often missing from the conversations about colonization in the U.S. are rigorous, comprehensive, academically supported Native-led studies proving that— even through the lens of modern law— large areas of what we call the United States were truly stolen and remain illegally occupied. And nowhere in our country is the evidence and culpability more dramatic than in the state of Colorado.
People of the Sacred Land follows Richard Williams (Oglala Lakota, Northern Cheyenne) as he recounts the widely untold history of Colorado through the findings of the Truth, Restoration, and Education Commission (TREC) reports.
Following the screening, Richard Williams and special guests will participate in a conversation about the film, its research and the broader questions it raises about history, place and responsibility. Guests are also invited to arrive early for a casual reception and an opportunity to engage in discussion with fellow attendees.
