After months of hard hats and hammers, The Community Grocer is ready to celebrate, and we want you at the table. We’ll gather on our block to hear from community leaders and reveal our mural created by our neighbors, in partnership with the Power of Paint. Then step inside for an open house to experience the first floor of our brand-new facility and enjoy hot samples made by our acclaimed team of local chefs.
Here’s what’s on the menu:
- “Setting the table” with a brief community-led program, featuring remarks by our partners and supporters who helped make TCG possible.
- See the unveiling of our brand-new mural created with our neighbors, local children and the Power of Paint.
- Step inside to experience the first floor of our store. Join our loyalty program at the counter and get a card to trade in for a hot sample from our kitchen, which you can enjoy outside at our Friendsgiving tables (heated, of course).
- Coffee, community resource tables, and free giveaways while supplies last.

About The Community Grocer:
At The Community Grocer (TCG), we believe everyone deserves access to the ingredients to live healthier, stronger lives. By reinventing the corner store, we’re making eating well easier and more accessible for all. Our long-term vision is a network of markets that advance food sovereignty—the right of communities to define their own food systems—to improve health, support local producers, and facilitate local economic development, in West Philadelphia and beyond.
TCG was born from grassroots action after the 2019 Philadelphia Energy Solutions Refinery explosion and the COVID-19 pandemic. Partnering with neighbors and the longstanding nonprofit Resident Action Committee II (RAC2), we distributed thousands of USDA food boxes and quickly learned that raw ingredients alone do not solve hunger. Families and neighbors needed prepared, dignified, healthy meals that met them in their daily routines, and to shape the systems that delivered them. Since then, our model has been built with and for our West and Southwest Philadelphia community, guided by the voices of neighbors every step of the way. TCG’s model will combine a grocery store, a workforce development kitchen powered by local apprentices, and a community health and resource hub where neighbors can use SNAP and other nutrition assistance to walk away with a hot, healthy meal. Legally bypassing Farm Bill limitations on SNAP benefits to raw ingredients, and verified by the USDA and Harvard Law’s Food Law and Policy Clinic, TCG’s model will be the first of its kind in the nation.
