About this Event
The second in a series of events sponsored by the NEA Big Read, this public forum will use Adrian Matejka's award-winning poetry collection The Big Smoke as a springboard to delve into deeper conversations about freedom, equality, and what it means to be an American. Heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson's life and legacy will be considered from a multidisciplinary perspective, including history, literature, law, and media representation.
Panelists include: Robert Greene II (Department of Humanities, Claflin University), Claire Lenviel (Department of English, Columbia College), Quintarrius Shakir (Department of Social Sciences, Allen University), Etienne Toussaint (Joseph F. Rice School of Law, University of South Carolina), and Fayaz Kabani (Department of English, Allen University, moderator)
