Get ready for an evening of fiery guitars, hand claps and irresistible rhythm. Flamnco Fever specializes in world class authentic Flamenco! For this special event guitarist Ricardo Rubí, singer Pepele Mendez, Singer /dancerJulia Alcántara, Guitarist/Percussionist/Dancer Charles Johnson and Percussionist: Jamal Mohamed and more will take over La Stella for a night of rumba flamenca in the spirit of the Gipsy Kings. That means sun-soaked Andalusian grooves, soaring vocals and the kind of rhythm that makes it impossible to stay in your seat.
Rubí is a Rome-born, Granada-based guitarist who has played Madrid’s legendary tablaos and the Texas Flamenco Festival. He leads a band of world-class musicians and dancers who bring the heat of a Spanish fiesta straight to your table. Pair great music with a great steak, a glass of wine and good company. It’s a Thursday night that feels like a trip to the south of Spain.
Reserve your table early. This one will fill up.
GUITARIST - Ricardo Rubí
Ricardo Rubí is a guitarist, composer and arranger working where flamenco, jazz and contemporary composition meet.
Born in Rome in 1994, he earned top marks in jazz guitar at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia and studied flamenco with masters Manuel Montero Miranda, José Antonio Rodríguez and Carlos de Jacoba. His big band work Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde took First Prize at the Barga Jazz International Composition Competition.
His career spans Italy and Spain. He has played reggae stages with Radici nel Cemento, toured Spain with a flamenco tribute to Miguel Hernández, joined the cast of Madrid’s Essential Flamenco tablao, and scored Nozze di Sangue, a Lorca adaptation starring Lina Sastri. He has composed for dance companies and big bands. In 2022 he played the Texas Flamenco Festival at Dallas’s Majestic Theater alongside Jorge Pardo.
Today Rubí lives in Granada, where he performs daily in the city’s leading tablaos. His 2024 debut album, Ricardo Rubí, was produced by Carlos de Jacoba. It marks him as a distinctive voice in flamenco’s new generation.
Julia Alcántara
A Texas native, Julia Alcántara is a dancer, choreographer and producer. She has championed flamenco in Dallas since 1998. She trained at the University of New Mexico and is the artistic and executive director of Ida y Vuelta / Flamenco Fever, and founder of the Texas Flamenco Festival. She has danced in The Dallas Opera’s La Vida Breve, at San Francisco’s Palace Theater, and at World Cup opening ceremonies. Her company was the first American flamenco company invited to Málaga’s International Festival
Charles “Luckie” Johnson
Known on stage as Luckie “El Abejorro,” Charles Johnson is a key artist with Dallas’s Flamenco Fever. He performs as a dancer, backup singer and percussionist, and teaches flamenco guitar for the company. He has shared the stage with Julia Alcántara and international guests from Spain and Argentina. His rhythm and versatility drive the heartbeat of every show.
Pepele Méndez
Pepele Méndez comes from Jerez de la Frontera and belongs to the legendary Méndez flamenco clan led by his aunt, La Paquera de Jerez. He debuted at Tokyo’s National Theater and has sung at the Bienal de Sevilla and Cante de las Minas. He has worked with Raimundo Amador and Jorge Pardo. Now based in Granada, he brings a metallic, unmistakably Jerez voice to pure cante and rumba alike.
I found Charles Johnson in the Flamenco Fever listings as Charles “Luckie” Johnson, and I’m assuming he’s the same person as Luckie “El Abejorro.” Please confirm that, along with his main role in this show. If you have a few more details about him, like his background, years playing, or other credits, I can make his bio fuller.
