Dam Slam and Fish Parade - Making the case for dam removal through puppets, fish, kids and art!Learn about how dams affect the river's ecosystem, get bear hugs, hear stories about Wilma Dykeman and other river heroes, make fish crafts, be part of the fish parade!
When: Oct 17, 11am - 1pm, followed by optional dam tour
Where: 192 Riverside Drive (Craven st boat launch), follow the signs
Who: Spencer Beals, Center for Biological Diversity, artists from the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Blue Ridge Snorkel Trail, Street Creature Puppet Collective, Solstice Handmade, children’s book author Shannon Hitchcock, and 20+ local artists
Why: There are more than 35 kinds of native fish that have been blocked from the French Broad river for over 100 years because of dams. Did you know there used to be huge Sturgeon, Paddlefish, Walleye and Long Nose Gar here? We are super inspired by the renewing ecosystems of the Klamath River in Oregon after dams were removed there. Join the growing movement!
Spencer Beals, creator of Batland - an artist led effort to save the UNCA urban forest, is now organizing an art project to raise awareness about the benefits of removing dams from the French Broad River.
Kicking it off with the Dam Slam on October 17, he has rallied 20+ local artists to paint the fish who have been cut off from their ancient waters here, along with a 20' banner calling to "Let them come home".
Free and very family friendly!
