Cheveux afro (Afro Hair)

As part of Documentary Film Month, Alliance Française de Toronto teams up with the Institut français, with support from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, to present a special evening featuring:

• A welcome reception hosted by L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, who will transform our galleries into a space dedicated to hair diversity.
• A screening of the short film Josepha (1975), a portrait of a Parisian beautician who encourages Black women to embrace their natural hair, followed by two episodes of the documentary series Cheveux afro on the aesthetic, social, and political history of Afro hair.
• A conversation, moderated by Cynthia-Laure Etom, with Antoine Akouissonne, photographer, filmmaker, and son of Joseph Akouissonne, director of Josepha; and Natacha Castor, Director of Education Services for Well-Being, Mental Health and Social Work at Conseil scolaire Viamonde.

Films will be screened in French with English subtitles

Admission Policy

Free admission. We recommend reserving your spot. Your ticket guarantees priority access up to 15 minutes before the screening.

• Arrival & Seating: Reserved seats are held until 15 minutes before the screening. After this time, unclaimed seats will be released to walk-in guests.
• Late Arrivals: Latecomers will be admitted at the discretion of staff, subject to seat availability.
