Music by the groundbreaking bassist JACO PASTORIUS is in the spotlight at “JACO 75,” a concert by Tampa based saxophonist Butch Thomas and a stellar ensemble in the Mainstage Theatre at HC/Ybor City on Sunday, November 8, at 3pm. As Jaco’s friend and colleague, Thomas brings his expertise and affection for the music to this project, presented by the Tampa Jazz Club and the HC Visual & Performing Arts Series. Jaco Pastorius, who would have turned 75 this fall, shot like a meteor through the music world, transforming the way the bass guitar is played and heard. He burst onto the scene with Weather Report in the mid-70s, and with other collaborators including Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, and Herbie Hancock. And he’s remembered for his innovative compositions as well as his breathtaking playing.
Butch Thomas, who had met Jaco before he even began playing the saxophone, was invited to join Jaco’s band as his first professional engagement after college and became a close associate. In later years Butch traveled with Sting, Thomas Dolby, and Lenny Kravitz and is a revered figure in the Bay Area music scene. And he’s an author, with his memoir “My Journey in Music” just now being published!
This extraordinary ensemble features bassist ELIAS TONA, along with percussionist GUMBI ORTIZ and drummer LUIS ALICEA. All three have toured for years with guitar-legend Al Di Meola. Joining them will be pianist EDEPSON GONZALEZ, trumpeter JAMES SUGGS, and guest saxophonist JACK CHRISTIAN.
Join the celebration of Jaco’s artistry and legacy at The Mainstage in Ybor City with these remarkable Bay Area artists, on Sunday, November 8!
