Bulgarian Folk Dance Afternoon for Teens & AdultsCome along for an active introduction to Bulgarian folk dancing - a chance to move, listen, learn and experience the music together.
This is a participation-based dance session. It is aimed at adults and young people aged 11+ who have an interest in music and dance (one accompanying adult for one or two children).
No previous experience with Bulgarian folk dances is required, but participants should be happy to get up, join in and have a go!
The afternoon will be divided into two dance sessions with a break in between. We will learn a selection of accessible folk dances (horo), starting with some easier steps and combinations. There may also be a few more challenging dances or variations for those who are ready to try them.
One of the highlights will be the opportunity to experience the Bulgarian gaida (bagpipe) live and to dance to its distinctive sound. We will learn at least two dances accompanied by the gaida, with the possibility of exploring a few more tunes together.
There will also be a small surprise for the teenagers — a taste of something from their parents' childhood, offering a little connection with the culture and memories.
And yes, for these two hours, TikTok will have to survive without you. Phones can take a little rest while you try something that has been keeping Balkan people moving long before anyone invented the scroll.
