About Aoife Moriarty
Aoife Moriarty is a Dublin-based singer-songwriter and composer. Her new album Artefacts is a collection of songs shaped over a decade. The album follows her debut Dolls & Jigsaws (2009), which earned critical praise for its blend of jazz-folk sensibility and offbeat charm.
After releasing her first album, Aoife stepped away from performing, drawn into parallel creative paths: she taught, designed, wrote and quietly gathered material. She completed an MA in Music Technology at the University of Limerick and wrote a Pr*son musical.
The songs that make up Artefacts emerged slowly, written on acoustic guitar and recorded over nine months in Dublin. They explore fractured identity, childlessness, impossible love, surreal memories and the courage it takes to begin again.
Aoife’s sound has been described as a jazz-folk fusion with impressionistic and whimsical lyrics. Artefacts favours self-reflection and experimentation. As Hot Press wrote of her debut Dolls & Jigsaws, “a highly accomplished quirky pop gem… buoyed by slick musicianship, sympathetic arrangements and the kind of pristine production that gives it a big budget sound.”
Her new work also draws inspiration from a futuristic, fictional, saxophone-playing Parisian character she created for a fashion collection, which informs the album artwork. Moriarty took method acting into songwriting by learning to play the saxophone while the songs were being finished and recorded.
Each track features its own arrangements, with strings, clarinet, saxophone and field recordings supporting the songwriting.
