About this Event
In visual art, chiaroscuro means the deep contrast between light and shadow. One could say that describes the deliberate use of shadow to give depth, form, and emotional weight to light.
In music, it invites the question: what kind of shadow makes this particular light shine so brightly? What lies beneath a serene surface?
Join us for a powerful recital by Houston's violin and piano ensemble Duo Dramatique, featuring violinist Dominika Dancewicz, and pianist Andrew Schneider. The Duo explores the hidden depths and dramatic contrasts of three iconic masterworks:
Ludwig van Beethoven, Violin Sonata No. 5 in F Major, Op. 24 "Spring". Beneath its famous, sunlit lyricism lies hard-won resilience, as it was written at the exact moment Beethoven was secretly confronting the terrifying onset of his deafness.
Dmitri Shostakovich, Four Preludes, Op. 34 (arr. Dmitri Tsyganov). A set of highly contrasting miniatures filled with biting irony, circus tunes, and dark vulnerability inspired by composer's dealing with reality of 1930s Soviet Russia.
Cèsar Franck, Sonata in A Major. A late Romantic masterpiece of transformation, taking listeners from lyrical wandering through turmoiled struggle, to an explosive, triumphant resolution.
This concert will be an unforgettable experience of high drama: extraordinary lyricism, grotesque resilience, intimacy, and triumph.
This concert is a part of "Music at the Meeting House", a series created and hosted by First Congregational Church of Houston.
It is free and open to all, however it is not recommended for very small children.
