Joe Louis Walker was born in San Francisco on Christmas Day 1949 and was a known quantity on the Bay Area scene by sixteen. He roomed with Mike Bloomfield for years and played alongside John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush and Jimi Hendrix. He took a Grammy for his work on James Cotton's Deep in the Blues, entered the Blues Hall of Fame in 2013, and died in April 2025.
Walker formed the Bosstalkers after his 1985 New Orleans Jazz Fest set, and now his band brings his songs home to San Francisco. Henry Oden, who gave Walker his song Shade Tree Mechanic and toured with Freddie King, plays bass, with Paul Revelli on drums and Daniel on keys.
Out front is Paul Steward, the Pomo guitarist from the Elem Indian Colony who won a Native American Music Award for Blues Album of the Year with Twice As Good, his duo with his father Richard. Together they play Walker the way Walker played it, loud and live, in the city that made him.
